SUMMARY:Sunday Ecstatic Dance at The Yoga Barn
DESCRIPTION:\nEvery Sunday late morning, the upper studio at The Yoga Barn in Ubud fills with a couple of hundred barefoot people dancing with no choreography, no instruction and — this is the part that surprises first-timers — no talking. Ecstatic Dance is a free-form movement practice, not a class and not a party, and it has become one of the most reliable ways for a visitor to drop straight into Ubud’s community rather than observing it from the edge.\n\n\n\nThe session runs from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. A DJ builds a single continuous set — global rhythms, downtempo openings, a peak in the middle, a soft landing at the end — and how you move through it is entirely your own business. Nobody is watching, nobody is correcting you, and the etiquette exists specifically so that stays true. The Yoga Barn launched Ecstatic Dance in Bali in 2009, and the Sunday session has been running long enough to have its own regulars alongside a steady flow of travellers.\n\n\n\nThere are two studios. Upstairs holds around 170 dancers and costs IDR 180,000, bookable online through Megatix or paid on arrival. Downstairs holds about 100 and is IDR 100,000 walk-in only — but note that once the upstairs floor reaches capacity, downstairs dancers cannot move up. Tickets go on sale the Monday before each session, and check-in with your wristband runs from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM on the day. If the online listing shows “sold out,” it usually means pre-sales have gone, not the room — walk-ins are almost always still possible.\n\n\n\nThe rules are firm and worth knowing before you arrive. No talking inside the studios or on the upper deck. No phones, no photography, no video. No shoes on the dance floor. No alcohol or other substances. Cover up — swimwear is not clothing here. Children under 12 are not admitted, as the floor gets genuinely crowded. None of this is precious; it is what keeps two hundred strangers able to move freely in the same room.\n\n\n\nArrive early enough to check in without rushing, bring loose clothes you can sweat in and a water bottle, and give yourself somewhere soft to land afterwards — the Garden Kafe serves a Sunday buffet lunch and most people stay for it. The Yoga Barn is a short walk from central Ubud down Jalan Hanoman, and the same Ecstatic Dance format runs on Friday evenings if Sunday does not suit.\n
