SUMMARY:Banyu Pinaruh
DESCRIPTION:\nBanyu Pinaruh falls on Sunday 1 November 2026 — the day after Saraswati Day, and inseparable from it. Where Saraswati honours knowledge, Banyu Pinaruh is the morning Balinese Hindus go out to bathe in it: at dawn, families walk to the sea, to rivers, springs and holy water sources across the island for a ritual cleansing that closes the Saraswati observance and opens the new 210-day Pawukon cycle.\n\n\n\nThe name comes from banyu, water, and pinaruh, from weruh, knowledge — literally ‘water of knowledge’. The idea is that the wisdom received on Saraswati is sealed by purification of body and mind. People wash their faces, hair and bodies in the sea or spring water, then drink or sprinkle tirta, holy water, that has been blessed at the temple the night before. Many carry a small offering and leave it at the water’s edge.\n\n\n\nFor visitors the most striking places to see it are the beaches at first light: Sanur, Padang Galak and Mertasari on the east coast, where hundreds of families arrive before sunrise in temple dress; Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring, whose purification pools draw long queues; and the spring temples of Sebatu and Tirta Gangga in the east. In villages it is often a short procession to the nearest river.\n\n\n\nBanyu Pinaruh is followed the next morning by Soma Ribek, an offering day to Dewi Sri, the rice goddess, and two days later by Pagerwesi, when the island reinforces its spiritual defences. Together they form the opening week of the Balinese year, and each one is observed island-wide rather than at any single venue.\n\n\n\nVisitor notes: this is an early-morning event — the bathing is done before or just after sunrise and the beaches empty by mid-morning. Anyone is welcome to watch respectfully from the sand, and many visitors join in; if you do, wear a sarong and sash, and enter the water only where locals are bathing. Do not photograph people at prayer without asking. Temple pools like Tirta Empul charge a small entrance fee and provide sarongs. It is not a public holiday, so the rest of the island runs as normal.\n
