SUMMARY:Karangasem Festival
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Karangasem Festival is one of East Bali’s most vibrant annual celebrations — four days of cultural performances, traditional parades, and community gatherings marking the anniversary of Amlapura city, the administrative heart of Karangasem Regency. In 2026, the festival runs June 19–22 at Taman Budaya Candra Bhuana, the cultural arts center in Amlapura.\n\n\n\nThe festival opens with a cultural parade that brings together all eight subdistricts of Karangasem — each delegation arriving in full traditional dress, carrying offerings and performing to mark their identity within the regency. For visitors, this parade is one of the most visually striking events in Bali’s east: the colors, textiles, and ceremonial formations are distinctly Karangasmese, reflecting a cultural tradition that differs noticeably from the Denpasar or Ubud styles most tourists encounter.\n\n\n\nBeyond the parade, the four-day program includes arts performances, an UMKM exhibition showcasing local craftspeople and small businesses, a food market with dozens of local vendors, and evening concerts featuring both local Balinese artists and national performers. The festival has also included adventure sports, photography competitions, and a community appreciation ceremony honoring outstanding local artists and public figures.\n\n\n\nKarangasem is often called Bali’s most authentic regency — home to Pura Besakih (the Mother Temple), the water palace of Tirta Gangga, Amed’s black-sand coastline, and Tenganan, one of Bali’s oldest Bali Aga villages. The festival is a reflection of that identity: grounded, proud, and not designed for tourists — which makes it worth seeking out.\n\n\n\nIf you’re traveling in East Bali in late June, plan to arrive by June 19 for the opening parade. Amlapura is about 1.5–2 hours from Seminyak and 1 hour from Ubud. The festival grounds at Taman Budaya Candra Bhuana are in central Amlapura, easy to reach by car or motorbike. Entry is free.\n
