SUMMARY:Ulun Danu Festival
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Ulun Danu Festival is an annual cultural celebration centred around Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, one of Bali’s most iconic and photographed temples. Perched on the misty shores of Lake Beratan in the Bedugul highlands, this Hindu water temple is dedicated to Dewi Danu — the goddess of lakes and rivers — making it one of the most spiritually significant sites on the island.\n\n\n\nThe 2026 festival runs 21 June – 9 August as a free 50-day Parade Gebogan & Baleganjur — featuring processional gebogan offerings and baleganjur gamelan drumming. The festival brings together traditional Balinese dance, music performances, lake ceremonies, and cultural displays that honour the Balinese connection to water and the highland agriculture that sustains much of the island’s food supply. The cool Bedugul air and the temple’s reflection in the still lake surface make this one of Bali’s most atmospheric festival settings.\n\n\n\nUlun Danu Beratan is located about 70 km north of Denpasar, roughly 1.5 hours by car. The temple and surroundings are open to visitors throughout the festival period. Dress respectfully — sarong and sash are available at the entrance for a small fee — and arrive early in the morning for the best light and the quietest experience before tour groups arrive.\n\n\n\nThe wider Bedugul area makes this an easy and rewarding day trip from Ubud or Seminyak. Combine the festival visit with a walk through the Kebun Raya Bali botanical gardens, a stop at Baturiti’s strawberry farms, or a drive around the scenic lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan for a full highland experience.\n\n\n\nCeremonies at Ulun Danu often take place early in the morning and are deeply spiritual in nature. Photography is generally permitted from the grounds, but enter quietly and keep a respectful distance from any active ceremony in progress.\n
