Ceremony Ngelegi (Manis Galungan)

Ceremony Ngelegi (Manis Galungan)

Manis Galungan — the day after Galungan — is celebrated across Bali with temple visits, family gatherings, and ceremonial offerings. At Pura Rambut Petung, dedicated to Batara Sangkara (Batara Gede Lingsir Rambut Petung), the pujawali (temple festival) is held on every Manis Galungan, drawing more than 500 families of supporters for communal prayers and ritual offerings.

The ceremony follows the end of the ten-day Galungan preparation period, marking the return of ancestral spirits who descended to earth on Galungan day. Manis Galungan is a time for celebration and gratitude — the word “manis” means sweet, reflecting the joyful spirit of the day. At Pura Rambut Petung, this sacred occasion is observed with traditional Balinese ceremony, gamelan music, and offerings.

Pura Rambut Petung is also an important source of tirtha (holy water) for surrounding villages, including Desa Tenganan, making this temple and its ceremonies particularly significant in the region’s religious life. The Galungan cycle occurs every 210 days on the Balinese Pawukon calendar, meaning the ceremony takes place twice within a Gregorian year.
