Soma Ribek
Soma Ribek
Soma Ribek falls on Monday 2 November 2026, the day after Banyu Pinaruh and two days after Saraswati. It is the day Balinese Hindus honour Dewi Sri, the goddess of rice and prosperity, by making offerings to the rice they have stored at home — and it is one of the quieter, more domestic days of the Balinese calendar, observed in kitchens and granaries rather than at great temples.
The name is usually read as ‘Monday of fullness’ — soma is Monday, and ribek means full or overflowing. The offerings are placed on or beside the household rice store: in older homes the lumbung, the raised wooden granary with its curved thatched roof; in modern ones simply the rice bin or sack in the kitchen. Families give thanks for the harvest already in hand and ask that the store never run empty. On this day, traditionally, rice is not pounded, cooked from fresh or sold — it is left to rest.
For visitors this is not a spectacle day. There are no processions and nothing to buy a ticket for. What you may notice, walking through a village in the morning, is the offering trays outside kitchens and beside granaries, incense in the doorway, and women in temple dress moving between house compounds. In the rice-growing heartland — Jatiluwih, Sidemen, the terraces around Ubud — a few farmers still make the offering in the fields as well as at home.
Soma Ribek sits in the middle of the week that opens the Balinese year: Saraswati on the Saturday, Banyu Pinaruh’s dawn bathing on the Sunday, Soma Ribek on the Monday, Sabuh Mas on the Tuesday, then Pagerwesi on the Wednesday. Each honours a different aspect of what sustains life — knowledge, purification, food, wealth, and spiritual protection.
Visitor notes: if you are staying in a family compound or homestay, ask whether you can watch the offering being made; most hosts are glad to explain it. Do not step over or move an offering tray. It is a normal working day for the rest of the island, and there are no closures. The one thing that changes is that some traditional households will not sell rice that day.
