Makepung Bull Race 2026

Makepung Bull Race 2026

Makepung is West Bali’s most visceral spectacle — pairs of water buffaloes thundering down straight dirt tracks carved from harvested rice fields, driven by jockeys standing on narrow wooden carts called cikar. The word comes from kepung, meaning “chase,” and the tradition was brought to Jembrana by Madurese migrants centuries ago. Today it remains one of the most authentic and least-touristed events on the Bali calendar.

The 2026 season opens on June 28 with the Bhayangkara Cup at Pengambengan and runs every few Sundays through to the Jembrana Cup Finals in November. All races are free to attend and start early — be at the circuit by 7:30am. Heats run across three divisions, with the Eastern Division (red) racing against the Western Division (green). The competitive season peaks at the Governor’s Cup in October, the most prestigious race of the year, drawing the largest crowds and the most spirited betting.

The buffalo fashion show is an unexpected highlight: before the races begin, prized buffaloes are paraded in elaborate traditional costumes, decorated from hoof to horn with ornaments. It’s absurd, spectacular, and genuinely beloved by the local crowd.

Getting to Jembrana takes about two hours from Seminyak or Kuta by car or scooter. Negara is the capital of the regency and the base for most races, though the circuits rotate between villages. Check local listings for the specific circuit each race day — the schedule is confirmed a week or so in advance. Bring sunscreen, arrive early, and expect a long, loud, wonderful morning in one of Bali’s most authentic rural communities.
