Bali Kite Festival 2026

Bali Kite Festival 2026

Every July and August, the skies above Padang Galak Beach in Sanur turn into a spectacle unlike anything else in Southeast Asia. Enormous kites — some stretching ten metres long with tails that trail hundreds of metres behind them — rise above the coast on the dry-season winds, operated by teams of dozens hauling ropes in unison. This is the Bali Kite Festival, one of the island’s great cultural traditions and a completely free event that draws visitors and locals together on the beach.

The festival has deep roots in Balinese Hinduism. Kite flying was historically a way to send messages of gratitude to the gods, giving thanks for a good harvest and asking for blessings on the land. The tradition was formalised into a competitive festival in the 1970s, and today teams from every regency in Bali compete for trophies including the Governor’s Cup. The kites themselves follow three traditional designs: the fish-shaped Bebean, the leaf-shaped Pecukan, and the Janggan — a dragon-style kite with an extraordinarily long flowing tail.

The main competition dates are announced closer to the season and vary slightly each year depending on wind conditions and the Balinese calendar, but the peak of the festival typically falls in late July at Padang Galak. Even outside the competition days, kites fill the skies across Bali throughout this season — you’ll spot them rising above beaches and rice fields island-wide from June through September.

For visitors, there’s nothing to pay and nothing to book. Arrive at Padang Galak Beach in the morning — competition kites launch early, around sunrise or shortly after, to catch the best coastal winds. Bring water, sunscreen, and something to sit on. The atmosphere is festive: gamelan music plays, crowds cheer, and the scale of the kites has to be seen in person to be believed.

A practical note: stay clear of the kite launch areas and the lines running across the beach. Competition kites are powerful and the ropes carry real force. Give the teams room to work, and you’ll have an unobstructed view of one of Bali’s most photogenic cultural events.
