Pagerwesi 2026
Pagerwesi 2026
Pagerwesi — meaning “iron fence” — is one of the most sacred days in the Balinese Hindu calendar, celebrated four days after Saraswati Day. Where Saraswati honours knowledge, Pagerwesi honours spiritual fortification: the strengthening of the self against negative forces, confusion, and distraction. It falls on Budha Kliwon Sinta, the Wednesday of the Kliwon week in the Sinta week of the 210-day Pawukon cycle.
On this day, Balinese Hindus perform prayers and make offerings at home shrines and village temples, asking for strength, clarity, and protection for themselves, their families, and their communities. The ceremony is especially important at Pura Agung temples across Bali — major regency temples hold large ceremonies, and smaller banjar temples hold community prayers throughout the day.
Pagerwesi is observed island-wide and follows immediately from the spiritual momentum of Saraswati Day. The two celebrations together — Saraswati and Pagerwesi — form one of the most significant consecutive ceremonial periods in the Balinese calendar. You will find offerings at family compound shrines, incense at doorways, and the sound of gamelan at temples across every regency.
For visitors in Bali on November 4, 2026, Pagerwesi is best experienced at local temples in the morning. The ceremonies are community-oriented and widely distributed — ask your host or guide which temple in your area will be most active. Dress respectfully in a sarong and sash if you plan to observe prayers up close.
