Every Tuesday, Deus Ex Machina — Canggu’s legendary Temple of Enthusiasm — runs one of the most eclectic evenings on the island. The night weaves together a proper open mic set featuring spoken word, indie folk, and live acoustic music, alongside the long-running Tacos n’ Tattuesdays deal that has become a Canggu institution in its own right.
The open mic runs in the evening as the venue settles into its after-dark rhythm — expect a rotating cast of local and passing musicians, poets, and performers on the stage in the garden courtyard. The crowd is a mix of surfers, creatives, long-term expats, and curious travellers, which is exactly what Deus attracts every night of the week.
The Tacos n’ Tattuesdays deal is the afternoon anchor: IDR 150,000 gets you four tacos, a margarita, and a free tattoo (small designs — letters, numbers, simple symbols). It runs on a strict first-come-first-served basis. Arrive by 4:30pm if a free tattoo is on your agenda — the slots fill fast. Larger designs are available for an additional fee.
Deus Ex Machina is more than a bar. The Temple of Enthusiasm in Canggu is a motorcycle workshop, concept store, art gallery, skate bowl, barber shop, and live music venue occupying a single open compound on Jalan Batu Mejan. It is one of the places that made Canggu what it is, and Tuesday night is one of its most honest expressions of that.
Practical tip: Go early for the Tattuesdays deal (arrive by 4:30pm), stay for the open mic. Entry to the venue is free. Dress is as casual as it gets — board shorts are fine.
