Nyepi – Bali’s Day of Silence 2026
Nyepi is Bali’s most sacred and unique holiday — a full 24 hours of complete silence observed across the entire island. Falling on the Balinese Saka New Year, Nyepi 2026 takes place on March 19th and begins at 6:00 AM, ending at 6:00 AM on March 20th.
During Nyepi, all of Bali comes to a standstill. Roads are closed to traffic, the airport shuts down, businesses close, and even the internet is restricted. Locals and visitors alike are expected to remain indoors, refrain from working, avoid entertainment, and keep lights dimmed after dark. The island falls into an extraordinary, rare silence.
The four prohibitions of Nyepi — known as Catur Brata Penyepian — are: no fire or lights (Amati Geni), no working (Amati Karya), no travelling (Amati Lelungaan), and no entertainment (Amati Lelanguan).
The day before Nyepi, the streets come alive with the spectacular Ogoh-Ogoh parade, where enormous demon effigies are carried through neighborhoods and then burned to purge negative spirits before the new year begins.
For visitors, Nyepi is a profound and deeply memorable experience. Plan ahead: stock up on food and water the day before, stay in your accommodation, and embrace the stillness. It is one of the most extraordinary things you can witness in Bali.
