Although the main attractions for Nusa Penida are coral reefs, diving, fishing, and beautiful beaches, it’s also a hidden jewel for bird-watching enthusiasts. Because the interior of the island hasn’t had much development like the coastal areas over 50 bird types have taken refuge in the thick green foliage of the higher-ground hills. Of all these species the rarest bird is the Bali Starling also known in Balinese as the “Jalak” . The Starling is pure white with a beautiful crest on its head with black tips on its wings and tail. Beautiful cobalt blue rings surround its eyes and part of its beak. The Starling can grow up to 25 cm and is a medium-sized bird. In 2015 the Jalak was on the verge of extinction but now is starting to come back in numbers after just 6 years. Luckily Nusa Penida has been transformed into an unofficial bird sanctuary by Friends of National Parks Foundation (FNPF), an Indonesian NGO based in Bali.
