Terraced farmland in the village of Kutampi, Nusa Penida.
An interesting and mysterious feature on the island are the terraced stone walls. Entire hillsides have been terraced from top to bottom using ther local limestone. When asking the locals they say the ancestors of the island built them over hundreds of years. Considering how many hills there are on the island it’s hard to imagine the labor involved in creating these beautiful walls. Most farming structures are built in the traditional fashion that has been used for centuries so stumbling upon and farming rest or storage shed looks the same way it would of 2 centuries ago. Its well worth getting out to explore the interior of Nusa Penida for a true Bali experience.
