Beef Rendang is the most popular dish in Indonesia. This dish is originally from Padang Sumatra and takes hours to cook. This recipe is easy to make at home and only needs 1 hour 35 minutes to cook.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams beef
  • 20 shallots
  • 20 cloves of garlic
  • 15 big red chilies
  • 6 cm ginger
  • 100 grams galangal
  • 12 candlenuts
  • 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 5 bay leaves
  • 3 lemongrass
  • 3 kaffir lime leaves
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 pc cinnamon
  • half teaspoon of cardamom
  • one teaspoon of salt
  • 4 teaspoons of bouillon powder
  • 100 ml instant coconut milk
  • 400 ml water
  • 100 ml cooking oil

How to Cook

Cut the beef into 3 cm cubes.

Place shallots, garlic, big red chilies, ginger, candlenuts, coriander seeds, nutmeg, and cardamom in a food processor and process into a paste.

Slice the galanggal.

Heat cooking oil in the wok, add spices paste, galangal, lemongrass, bay leaves, kaffir lime leaves, cloves, cinnamon, and star anise. Stir for 15 minutes.

Add beef, coconut milk and water.

Add salt and bouillon powder for the flavor. Stir.

Cook for 50-60 minutes.

Rendang is ready to serve.
